Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation
You’ve probably heard nitrous oxide referred to by a sillier name—laughing gas! Thankfully, when children breathe in this colorless, odorless gas, it won’t reduce them to giggles, but rather help them quickly relax in the dental chair. The gas is administered through a small nasal mask that stays on for the entire appointment. Nitrous oxide is so gentle that it can be safely used with even the youngest children, plus it has no lingering effects once the mask is removed, meaning your child can go straight back to school after their appointment.
General anesthesia sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” is where a child is rendered completely unconscious during their dental appointment so they will wake up with no memory of it afterward. This approach is usually best for:
- Children with special needs or behavioral issues that make receiving dental care extremely difficult or impossible.
- Children with extreme dental fear that prohibits them from sitting still during an appointment.
- Children who are in need of a long/complex procedure.
This form of sedation will be administered in a hospital setting by a licensed anesthesiologist who will closely monitor your child while they are under to ensure they are completely comfortable and safe the entire time.
